Uneffective is the new effective

I have started writing many different blogposts for this blog, but even after many edits I cannot finish the text in a way that I would be satisfied and feel like this is the thing I need to add. At the same time, the words of another personal branding blogger’s rang in my head “Don’t blog about everything. You need to write only about what your readers wish to read about.” Ain’t that true?

Writing these posts, re-reading them, perfectioning them I have felt like a student studying for exams – I find a lot of things to do, just to avoid writing – I clean my rooms, go shopping, read other people’s blogs, Facebooking. From Facebook I found the picture below. I do not think like that, normally, because I like what I do and I do it, normally.

.

Forget everything you know and start thinking

Spending time doing nothing, “wasting” time is something you need to generate ideas, to let the ideas grow and pop up – there is a saying “The nature does not like an empty space” which to me means, that once your mind is empty, something new will fill it up again, generating the next step, solution to a problem, poetry, idea. 14-year-old boy with autism, Jacob Barnett who writes articles on astrophysics invited in his Tedx Teens speech for all of us to forget all we know and start thinking and doing things in our own way. In his point of view, this is the path to your own uniqueness and a way to create something completely new.

The doctors told Jacob that he himself might never learn to walk or talk. The boy, instead, started exploring the world, his interests, went into detail and forgot what the doctors told. Going in depths to things he found fascinating (shapes, shadows) he started seeing things from his perspective. At the age of 14 he is considered as a genius. So you could say he speaks from his experience when he says that to achieve your dreams, develop your skills you need to forget all your old ways and learnt patterns and find the unique way of seeing and doing things. The opinions and knowledge of others are only obstacles in the creation process.

So, spending time doing nothing is OK? OK?

How about feeling as a loser?

James Altucher, my new favorite blogger most likely would agree with Jacob, that it is possible to be “successful” when you find your path through doing what you like. He wrote, amongst other things, about, how to be an effective loser. Thanks to that blogpost I feel much better (that sounds like a hair shampoo advertisement …) for not having posted anything meaningful and important in the field of personal branding after months of making notes and drafts. I have dealt with other things that are important to me and learnt from that, have read books, followed some interesting thoughts. And finally wrote this post.

How to be an effective loser according to Altucher? With comments

- Do not try to be the best. It’s a very hard job and it is easier to do what you like and forget climbing the “ladder”.

- Have a notebook close by and note down things you see in this world and what you can learn from. Every meeting, information read has something you can learn from or at least brings you closer to that. Paper is better than smartphone or iPad, since you can re-write, draft ideas and burn the pages if  you want to. Even when the ideas do not form in real life, they are written down and have a form on paper.

- Change is not always necessary – being a loser is like being anyone else. You wish to be like the “normal” people, not the ones who try to be perfect.

- Doing what you like, earning money will not be the main goal. While doing what you like, you already are happy and isn’t that our main goal? Instead lower your expectations.

- I especially like that Altucher suggests everyone to do many different things. “Winners focus. Losers diversify”. Try, fail, do something else, fail again, get “no-s”. Do something else. And one day you will succeed. Maybe creating a field of your own completely.

- Do every day at least for 15 minutes something you like. This way you grow your skills every day.

Altucher has more suggestions which you can read from his blog.

Tricks to overcome fear

To finish this post I add a picture to think about. Fear is one of the main obstacle in achieving what you want (however we define it). Following our dreams, launching a new venture, publishing a poem, showing love to someone or 100+1 other things. Forget the fear, lower your own expectations to yourself and do what you love. Fail and then fail again with a smile on your face, because at the end of the day, you have done what you wished.

Create meaning with your choices

The window of opportunities is always open! What do you see there? What do you choose to put into action?

Every day offers millions of opportunities.

We have bigger and smaller choices to make. With every choice we make, an effect is made to our immediate future, to a future long ahead and it also influences people and events that we cannot always see and control anymore. If you have ever seen a movie “Crash“, you know what I am talking about.

Though we can try and do our best to make good and beneficial choices, we can never control life 100%. In light of this, I wish you wisdom and courage to make the best choice that will create meaning for your, your close ones, your partners and also to those who will be affected in some mysterious way.

Wishing a happy new year-circle to all the current and future clients and partners!

Career in the Age of the App

Milliseid rakendusi soovid ja vajad lisada oma karjääri edendamiseks? /What applications you need and want to add to develop your career?

For a long time, the focus in career planning has been on the model of a “career ladder” and climbing it. The model considers that your career is like climbing up a ladder with the aim to reach the final step – to the top. It makes a notion that if you do not succeed in getting up there, you have failed. Thus we can see the division of people into two groups: those who tried to reach the top of the ladder and those who decided to stay on the “lower” steps. This model is quite sad and very linear, as Jenny Blake mentions in one of the Tedx videos. You can see the video below.

Firstly, the people who have reached the top of the ladder still want to develop further and their career is far from over.

Secondly, moving constantly to one direction means a lot of pressure to a person. You either reach the top or you have failed – what a mind job!

Thirdly, career ladder model is a closed system which means that once you have reached the goal, it makes you feel like this is it.

Career in the age of Mobile Applications

Jenny offers a new model in her presentation, which I really enjoy and which I believe is more accurate in today’s business environment and work models. The basis of this model is a fact that we all have so much more opportunities to develop and grow in the era we live in. All the paths are open, the mentality in the society is focused on the belief that you can achieve what you wish for and you do not work in the same company your whole life. Adding that the goal of your career is not to reach somewhere in the top meaning the end of  your career, but your career can and will develop horizontally.

Of course, this hides a number of threats such as over-working, the constant need to develop and broaden your knowledge to stay on track. Acknowledging that, it is easier to make a break and write down your wishes career wise which help you create an adequate career plan and action plan to reach your professional personal brand.

The model Jenny introduced has been inspired by smartphones. She calls it the Career in the age of the App. Imagine a smartphone. When you get your smartphone, you can start adding multiple application which help you and make a regular phone into a unique and customized smartphone to your liking and needs. Now, think of yourself as this smartphone and think about all the skills, experiences, education, trainee-ships  work and projects you have as “apps” that help you through your professional life. You yourself have made and can constantly make choices on what kind of skills you need to add and what you do not need for the next project, work, actvity; what apps to you need to work 24/7? What apps to you need to relax?

Smartphone-model is very dynamic, flowing and really non-linear way of thinking about you and your career. And why not life in general? You can make a choice on what to add. Be it a school you choose, people you meet and project you have.

Main principles

1. Every experience is unique. Everything you do should be viewed in the light of what kind of experience/skill/knowledge can be derived from it. Every job will teach you something new, something valuable however mundane or far from what you really want to do in your life. Even if the job you do right now is not YOUR JOB 100% , try to find something to learn from it.  Maybe it is a skill to work in a team, a tecnical skill, maybe you get some really valuable contacts. This way you can “download” an app from every experience you have (had) and use it in the future making the set of unique applications you have more valuable and complete.

2. Dare to dream. It is important to realize that you do not have the whole picture, the Grand Plan and the reason you might need the little applications. We do not have to know at all times, HOW we reach the target – that makes the path to a goal more interesting and flexible, since the target itself may change while you are walking towards it.  If we’d use the ladder model, the change of the initial target would ruin the whole model. In the App model you can move both vertically and horizontally, broadening your field and specialization and creating something new according to your personal experience or skill required.

3. If you do not feel well 100% at your current job, it’s OK. This is an important principle with the aim to save you from burnout. If back in the days the only way was to aim for the career ladder top to be considered really successful then now the top is not the most important thing. All your experiences are additions that will take you to your real success – to what you really want. You don’t need to aim for multiple university degrees and use all the opportunities. You need to choose the applications that you consider important, necessary and interesting. If there is something that does not fit anymore, you can just “delete” it. If you see that an application does not really work for you, take the best of it and give it up and download a new app. Don’t expect your work to satisfy you 100%, find other ways to express yourself.

Think about what you are working on now, is this way of life worth the price you are paying for it? Or should you consider a change of applications?

Some recommendations to keep in mind while designing your career:

1. Create borders and charge your batteries. All opportinities must not be taken, this is the easiest way to become stressed and blocked, leaving you to full restart that could help you. Smartphones use batteries a lot, so it is necessary to charge the batteries often so that you won’t lose the “picture”.

2. Revise your applications from time to time. Delete the ones you do not need or that do not function; add those you need or update the skills that are beginning to ware out.

3. Don’t ask for permission. When people are starting to tell you that you can’t make it or it is not possible, take those statements as confirmations that you are on the right track.

4. Create and lean on your network. Lean on people who support you. It takes time to reach your goals and is great to have someone to lean on during that time. It is a source of happiness, relaxation, confidence, inspiration and just generally a way to push you further.

To summarize all the above, I have to say again that you are Your Life’s (Creative) Director. Do create something that you love to live with. There are now lower or higher steps of the ladder anymore, the importance of your work and reaching to a certain top depends on your own decision about what is important.

Challenge accepted: How to create an awesome team and grow it

When working alone, you may be much faster in accomplishing your tasks but with a team you will get further and deeper into the task. You can start alone with your idea for a product, a service or making the world a better place, but most likely you will need a team with whom you can take action for the common goal and implement it. How to create a Dream Team? A team that works, has one aim, has members that fit together and who will support the organisation and let’s each of the members to develop?

Erinevad oskused ja ühtne soov = lennukas meeskond / Diferent skills and one goal = a flying team

Recently I shared my experience on working with youth, non-governmental organizations, in private sector and developing my company in a Management and Export Conference Check-IN. I will share my some of the thoughts and slides with you.

One of the most thought provoking questions that every leader should ask in creating a team is whether I really need someone? If yes, then do I need him/her right now or maybe a bit later? What role should he/she have and what tasks should he/she do? What kind of values should he/she have, what skills? Your own company or project is like your “baby”. Every new member will change the tune of the team, brings along new customs and knowledge and ways of thinking. If the leader of the organization and the recruiter has a good understanding of the aim of the organization and where the organization is heading, it is far more likely to find a suitable candidate and a member who will fit the team-puzzle and brings in additional value. If you are not sure you need a new person or you do not know who he/she should be, it is better not to jump to hiring process before you have answered all the questions above. Bad hiring may create more emotional, financial and time loss that you can afford, or want to. And both parties will be disappointed. Who needs that?

Who is an “awesome” member of the team? A talent? In English we have accustomed ourselves with the word awesome. On one hand, it means something cool, fantastic, great, hip. On the other hand it is a word used too much, devaluing the meaning to something lame and boring. And that’s the way life goes: what is awesome to some, is not that awesome to another. A talent for you may not be a talent to another company. Thus, not every person fits the organization team even though the person might fill all the requirements. I believe that every person has a talent, you just need to find the right team (or create it) where your talent can blossom. Of course the skills and knowledge need to be there as well.

Now, when you have the team and it is developing, the importance of organizational culture arises, including the motivational systems. I agree with people who say that everyone should be able to motivate themselves and choose a job that makes them happy. Leading a team and the internal climate can (and will) keep, uplift or lower the motivation. So, think about what is important and motivating for the team and for its every member. The pay for the input needs to be according, yet the salary is not always the reason a person stays in the organization. A million-dollar question for you:  Would your team members leave as soon as they were offered a different environment, working conditions, higher pay? What does it say about them and their motivation? What does it say about your organization and leadership?

Growing the team means finding the right person and awaken the wish in him/her to work for you. How, you ask? One way to spread the information is all the employment portals, also your own organization’s website, but the best reputation manager for hiring new people is your own team member and an overall good reputation of the company. If you are active in your field, known and respected then your potential colleagues have most likely heard of you. Add here some campaigns, promotions and PR activities to show the culture of the company and the basis is created for good pool of CV-s to choose from. This does not come overnight and does require hard work and also the best of the people to hire do not move from one place to another in a day.

The fit between the goals of a person and the goals of the organization have more and more influence in creating a functioning team.  It is a skill to find the right person for the right job, or for a person to find the right job for him/her where he/she could dedicate and direct energy to. Visibility, distinctive culture, skills and a good match between the organization and the person are the basis in creating an awesome and functioning team.

Kas töötajate kontaktandmed peaksid olema nähtavad?

Tihtipeale on minu poole pöördutud küsimusega: Kas me peaksime panema organisatsiooni (olgu selleks ettevõte, mittetulundusühing, vm) töötajate kontaktandmed, pildid, tutvustavad tekstid ja muud veebilehele? Kui palju peaks panema? Miks see hea on? Aga ohud?

Kas on oluline teada, kellega klient organisatsioonist suhtleb?

Kuidas on lood sinu organisatsioonis?
